An Escape to Peaceful Isolation
When you live in a bustling city such as London, your soul sometimes craves a bit of peaceful isolation. For me, this hunger for tranquility led me to an unforgettable adventure in the Scottish Highlands.
Booking the Airbnb
My partner and I were looking forward to getting away from the metropolitan crowds. To our delight, we found just the perfect spot: the unique Airship 002. Perched on the banks of the Sound of Mull, this quirky architectural marvel became our home for a magical few days. My partner booked this as a Christmas gift, and it turned out to be one of the best presents ever.
The Journey to the Highlands
There’s something mesmerizing about a road trip taking you through diverse and stunning landscapes. As we crossed the border from England into Scotland, the scenery began to change dramatically.
The Drive
Driving along the banks of Loch Lomond, we didn’t miss a chance to marvel at the snow-capped peaks and stunning natural vistas. The journey was nothing short of cinematic, reminding us of the scenic routes Daniel Craig’s James Bond takes in “Skyfall.”
Ferry to Morvern Peninsula
One of the highlights was catching the Corran Ferry to the Morvern Peninsula—dubbed the best-kept secret in Scotland. Keeping our eyes peeled for golden eagles, we navigated through rolling hills and ancient woodlands.
Top domestic vacation destinations
Arrival at the Airship
Our host provided us with an easy-to-follow, hand-drawn map, and we soon arrived at our destination. The Airship 002, crafted from glass, steel, and aluminum, struck a striking figure against the landscape.
First Impressions
Despite its stark exterior, the interior was warm and welcoming. The comfy queen-size bed, bigger-than-expected bathroom stocked with locally-made toiletries, and a wood burner with a pile of logs waiting made us feel right at home.
Embracing the Seclusion
In such a remote location, the nearest store was some eight miles away. So we made it a point to stock up on supplies beforehand. The isolation only added to the charm and tranquility of our stay.
A Cozy Evening
As evening rolled in, we prepared a casserole on the countertop stove and enjoyed our meal at the fold-out table. Adding to the cozy experience, we donned our down jackets and relished a bracing drink on the balcony—a dram of local whiskey from the nearby Nc’Nean distillery shop. The starry night sky, free from light pollution, was nothing short of stunning.
Warming Up Inside
Retreating inside to the warmth of the Airship’s wood burner, we enjoyed some reading material from the Airship’s extensive collection of books. Curled up on the comfy sofa bench, the peaceful atmosphere was absolutely soothing.
The Adventure Continues
Waking up the next morning to rain clouds overhead didn’t deter us from exploring. Armed with waterproof gear, we headed out for some adventuring.
Through the Woods
Navigating through eerie woods reminiscent of Sleepy Hollow vibes, and crossing gushing streams, we finally arrived at the picturesque water’s edge.
Drimnin Ferry Landing
The historic Drimnin Ferry Landing’s corrugated iron hut provided enough shelter for our packed lunch. Though a water taxi across the Sound of Mull operates only twice a month from this spot, the seclusion offered a unique charm.
Things to Do in Tobermory
The water taxi drops you off at Tobermory, one of Scotland’s picture-postcard towns. Here are some top activities to consider:
Activity | Details |
---|---|
An Tobar Arts Center | Housed in a refurbished Victorian primary school, exhibits various art forms. |
Isle of Mull Soap Co. | Pick up handmade soaps and wax melts, making for perfect souvenirs. |
Fisherman’s Pier Fish & Chip Van | A winner of the 2023 inaugural Scottish Chippy Awards. Specials include lobster tails in garlic butter. |
Tobermory Bay Tours | One-hour outings offering the chance to see white-tailed eagles, red deer, porpoises, dolphins, and otters. |
Gin & Whisky Tasting Cruises | A 90-minute cruise offering delightful tastings of locally made gin and whisky. |
The Comfort of the Airship
Unfortunately, with worsening weather, we couldn’t take the water taxi to Tobermory. But cozying up in the Airship with another dram of whisky made for a delightful backup plan.
Weatherproof Experience
The storm rendered our view across the water into an enveloping dark mist, but the Airship’s solid structure kept us warm and comfortable. Playing board games and enjoying each other’s company made for precious memories.
