Just a short drive from Auckland, you’ll find Waitomo, a small town famous for its glow worm caves. These caves are truly a sight to behold, and we highly recommend taking a tour to get an up-close and personal experience with these amazing creatures.
While in the area, make sure to stop at the Kiwi House to learn all about New Zealand’s national bird. You might even get a chance to see these nocturnal animals in person. After your visit to Waitomo, continue west toward Rotorua.
On your way to Rotorua, make a stop at Hobbiton, the famous movie set from “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” films. Book your tour in advance to avoid disappointment and spend the day exploring the magical movie sets and learning about the making of these iconic films.
Once you arrive in Rotorua, prepare to be amazed by its geothermal wonders. This geothermal wonderland is full of bubbling mud pools, steaming hot springs, and erupting geysers. Take a day to relax and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of these natural hot springs. Don’t forget to try a traditional Maori dinner in the evening to complete your Rotorua experience.

Next up on the itinerary is Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake. This outdoor lover’s paradise offers plenty of activities to keep you busy. Whether you enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, or even skiing in the winter, Lake Taupo has it all.
While in the area, be sure to stop for lunch at the world’s coolest McDonald’s, complete with a retired DC3 plane. Dine inside the plane and experience a unique restaurant like no other. After lunch, take a short drive to Huka Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in New Zealand. And if you’re up for more adventure, visit the Craters of the Moon for a unique hiking experience.
Day 4: Napier
After a day in Lake Taupo, it’s time to head to Napier, the art deco capital of the world. This city was rebuilt in the 1930s following a devastating earthquake, and as a result, most of the buildings have an art deco style. Explore the art deco architecture on a historic vintage car tour and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Napier.
Go for a walk or bike ride along Marine Parade and visit one of the many wineries in Hawke’s Bay. For incredible views of the city, take a ride on the historic Wellington cable car. Wellington is a city that combines urban charm with natural beauty.
Day 6: Christchurch
Leaving Wellington, take a short plane ride to the South Island and land in Christchurch, the largest city on the island. Christchurch is still rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 but has become a city filled with character and resilience.

While in the city, grab a bite to eat at the recently opened Riverside Market, a food hall where you’ll find plenty of delicious food options.
