Nestlé Recalls 440,000 Starbucks Mugs Due to Overheating Concerns

At Nestlé, the safety and satisfaction of our customers are our top priorities. That’s why we are issuing a voluntary recall of approximately 440,000 Metallic Mugs included in the 2023 Starbucks Holiday Gift Sets. This recall is due to safety concerns regarding the mugs overheating, which can potentially cause burns or break and lead to cuts. We want to ensure that our customers are aware of the issue and take appropriate action to protect themselves.

Reasons for recall

The main reasons for the recall are the safety concerns associated with the mugs. Overheating issues have been reported, putting users at risk of burns and cuts. We take these concerns seriously and want to address them promptly to ensure the safety of our customers.

Description of affected mugs

The Metallic Mugs included in the Starbucks Holiday Gift Sets come in two sizes: 11 and 16 ounces. These mugs are made of ceramic with a metallic coating, giving them a sleek and stylish look. It is important to note that the bottom of the mugs carries a warning not to microwave them. However, the recall suggests that issues have also occurred when hot beverages were simply poured into the mugs.

Selling locations and dates

The affected mugs were sold both online and in-store at popular retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Nexcom. They were available as part of the Starbucks Holiday Gift Sets from November 2023 to January 2024. Some of these gift sets included packages of Starbucks hot cocoa mix, which were previously recalled in November 2023 due to the presence of illegal amounts of lead.

Link to Starbucks’ previous product recall

It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time Starbucks has addressed concerns related to overheating and product safety. In 2007, Starbucks recalled its 14-ounce Fusion Coffee mugs. These mugs, made from plastic and stainless steel, had detachable plastic handles that posed a risk when filled with hot liquid. The recall was initiated after 23 incident reports were received, with nine instances of minor burns reported.
